Salone Del Mobile is considered the holy grail of the home furnishing sector, bringing together the world’s designers and their latest brainchilds together for the world to see. This year the event will be held from 12th – 17th April in Milan as part of Milan Design Week. With over 300,000 visitors and 1350 exhibitors flocking to the city, it really is the Mecca of furnishing design. Anyone who’s anyone in the international furniture and manufacturing world can be seen strutting their stuff in the stalls of this event.
In its 55th year the week-long event brings forth events, exhibitions and product presentations, revealing the latest developments in the industry, as well as celebrating styles and inevitably setting major trends for the year to come. One such exhibition is the biennial Eurocucina exhibition, a space for designers to peacock their visions of the kitchen. Spread out over 23,000 square meters, 120 international brands will display quality kitchen products. With consumers becoming increasingly connected to technology, as well as having an increased awareness of health, it is said that sophisticated functionality, wellness and personalized self-care will be a consistent theme this year.

Across the board, Salone Del Mobile showcases quality within the industry, from designs, to the designers themselves. One way in which it does the latter is through the solonesatellite program. Whilst the event celebrates the giants of the industry, this program in particular gives young designers (under the age of 35) a chance to establish themselves. The theme this year in its 19th edition is ‘new materials, new design’, focusing on the mediums and techniques of production that are employed in contemporary practice. It’s an exciting opportunity for the new generation of designers and architects to share their work with the public, as well as potential manufactures.
The event holds such a prestigious reputation for a reason, it strives towards constant innovation, challenging creative minds to expand with the needs and trends of the industry. An exhibition featured this year is ‘ROOMS. Novel living concepts’. Curated by Beppe Finessi, it invites 11 of the best interior designers and architects to envision domestic spaces that exhibit their own philosophies and concepts of living. It is geared towards providing visions of home living that project to the future.
Salone Del Mobile is an integral vein of the international design community, acting as a catalyst to the growth of the industry. With just a matter of days before this year’s event, the design world braces itself in excited anticipation of what’s to come. Be sure to keep an eye on the event over the coming month to get a deeper insight into the design trends of the year to come.
