Founded in 1979, Mulder Design are a company that have made a name for themselves in the yachting industry. Beginning with the design of commercial vessels, the company soon gained recognition through the launch of high-speed yachts Octopussy, Moonraker, and The World is not Enough. Now joined by his sons Bas and Mike, the company continues to thrive with a reputation of excellence for naval architecture and custom and semi-custom designed yachts.
The key to their success seems to be in their distinct, holistic approach to the design process. Their core principle is that the custom designed yacht should be a direct reflection* of the owner’s personality and lifestyle, whilst bearing the signature of Mulder Design. To accomplish this aspect of design, the team encourage that the yacht owner to be personally involved in the design process.
Another attribute of the team is their holistic approach. When designing a yacht, they approach the project with a perspective of balance. They aim for an overall sense of quality, rather than focusing on one specific feature. Frank likens the process to peeling an onion, they explore the features over and over again, examining in detail how the how yacht comes together as a whole. The family run business claim that it is this methodical approach to their work that is largely responsible for their success.
With an appreciation for custom design, it seems only right that Mulder Design chose to build with Esthec. With variables in colour, design and texture, Esthec perfectly aligns with the core principle of the company, allowing the customer to maximize their personal taste on the Yacht. Bas Mulder testifies his appreciation of working with Esthec, saying “What we really like is the variation in colour, with Esthec you pick a colour and that colour stays for the rest of its life”. Esthec composite decking expands the possibilities of design choice enormously, allowing you to choose colours that blend with the furniture of the boat for example, as well as offering a multitude of patterns that succeed any conventional materials. Mulder goes on to say that “It’s not another replacement of traditional decking, but it is really something extra”.
Just like Mulder Design, Esthec focuses on the whole package, giving freedom to the designer, amazing durability and beautiful design. Mulder Design have made a full series with Esthec decking; the VanDutch series. With such mutual values it’s understandable that the team at Mulder Design have built well over 150 boats with Esthec in last 7 years.
